So what can I do with trade waste?

The Duty of Care (Environment Protection Act, 1990 Section 34) applies to anyone who produces or imports, keeps or stores, transports, treats or disposes of waste. It also applies if you act as a broker and arrange these things.

You have a Duty of Care to ensure you take all reasonable steps to keep waste safe. If you give waste to someone else (a waste contractor for instance), you must be sure they are authorised to take it and can transport, recycle or dispose of it safely. This Duty of Care applies to householders too.

If you break this law, you can be fined an unlimited amount.

For more information download a DEFRA leaflet here >> or their Duty of Care - Code of Practice here >>

Reduce - Reuse - Recycle

The first thing you should always do is segregate your waste so that anything that can be re-used or recycled is kept separate and not contaminated.

Materials that can be re-used or recycle include:

    • metals including cans
    • containers
    • cardboard
    • paper
    • textiles
    • plastics
    • glass
    • chemicals
    • wood

For FREE, impartial advice on these matters contact the Lancashire Business Environment Association (BEA) Waste Advisor on 01254 669031.

The Lancashire BEA can give advice but also operate a Waste Brokerage service for those organisations producing waste on a regular basis as someone's waste (YOURS!) can often be someone else's starting material. Register your waste on the Waste Brokerage Service now >>

If you have an application/process that might be able to use someone else's waste visit our sister website WasteWorks.org.uk

If after talking to the Lancashire BEA Waste Advisor you cannot find another use or recycle your waste there are a number of options available to you:

  1. Contact a skip hire company and have a skip delivered,
  2. Arrange for a private waste disposal or recycling company to collect your waste
  3. Take your waste to a private disposal/recycling facility or
  4. Arrange for your local authority to make regular pickups (see below).

Please be warned there will be a charge made for any of these services. Whichever service you elect to use you should ensure the provider complies with the Duty of Care requirements.

Let your local authority help!

Each authority can provide containers of various sizes which usually range from 120 to 1280 litres.

They are made of durable material, fitted with a plastic lid, and are are easy to manoeuvre as shown in the picture above from Preston City Council. The majority of containers have lockable lids to prevent odour escape, pest infestation and scavengers.

They are suitable for most types of waste (e.g. food waste, dry non-hazardous waste, commercial waste). Refuse collection vehicles will ensure the containers are emptied quickly and cleanly on a schedule to suit you.

Costs

  • Local authority prices are usually highly competitive and there are no hidden costs.
  • It is usually a contract service with the option of flexible billing.
  • Charges usually include one collection per week, and the hire of container.
  • Flexibility with the collection service can range from once a week to 6 times a week, whatever meets your requirements.
  • There is no initial large outlay.
  • It is in the interests of each local authority to be highly flexibility – if your requirements change just ring them and they will do their best to assist.

Contact the Cleansing Department or alternatively the Town Hall for your local authority to get the full details of your local services.
