Powers of the Enforcement Authority

There are a number of regulators or enforcement authorities for enviro crime. They are:

Environment Agency

The Environment Agency's enforcement and prosecution policy may be downloaded. It is envisaged that all local authorities in this region will adopt this or a similar enforcement policy.

Water Companies and Authorities

Local water companies have a number of duties relating to water supplies and sewerage but they also hold powers to control and police discharges of trade effluent to foul drains under the Water Industry Act. Water company trade effluent officers are responsible for implementing these powers and may be contacted through each company's main switchboard.

Local Authorities

Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) and Pollution Control Officers (PCOs) are responsible for administering, policing and enforcing the environmental legislation that comes under the jurisdiction of local authorities. EHOs and PCOs have a number of duties to perform and may be found in departments with a variety of different names.
